It always drives me nuts when I see “Best Of the Year” book lists that come out before the year is up. I read some of the best books during the quiet downtime between Christmas and New Years. I think reading is at its absolute best in December.

Words in Deep Blue is just one of those books that would have been skipped on my best of list if I shared a list a few weeks ago like a lot of sites do. It’s been sitting on my desk after a visit to the library, and yesterday I decided to scrap my to-do list and read. I am so glad I did because this was definitely one of my favorite books from 2017! I love reading really well written Young Adult books, and Cath Crowley hit the mark with this book….

2016 has started slow for me on the reading front…after exceeding my Goodreads goal from last year by 9 books, I guess I needed a little break at the beginning of this year. Well, that break lasted a couple of weeks and now I am absolutely craving reading time again! My goal is to read 52 books in 2016 (my goal in 2015 was 30 books, so I’ve upped the ante quite a bit!).

I was thinking that after I read each book, I’d share my thoughts on them with you all so you can hopefully add to your “want to read” lists.  You can expect a weekly book review post from me from here on out. Hopefully they’ll be on Fridays, but you all know how I am… that may not always be the case 🙂 (I love how you all still stick with me, even though I’m incredibly inconsistent!)

Prayers and Lies by Sherri Wood Emmons was a book I picked up while on vacation in Texas. I was pulled in by the cover image and that little girls piercing eyes, and then pulled the trigger on buying the book by reading the back cover description. I love discovering new authors and since this is a first book for Sherri Wood Emmons I was anxious to see how it was.

I found myself completely engrossed in Prayers and Lies from the very beginning. Bethanny and Renna Mae are cousins who have a very close relationship. As life unfolds, Bethanny discovers that Renna Mae is changing before her eyes… growing up far too fast and dealing with things a young girl her age shouldn’t be dealing with. As the two navigate changes in their family and secrets that are revealed, their relationship is strained but their family bond holds strong….
