Our very first “no longer in shelter in place activity” was to go strawberry picking! There’s a local farm we love that has a great reservation system in place to keep social distancing possible. We were able to get the first appointment of the day and practically had the entire strawberry patch to ourselves. It was wonderful – but I also maybe got a little too into finally being outside in public and went a little overboard on strawberries. $70 and 20 pounds worth of strawberries later, we were headed home with no idea how in the world we’d use this many berries! Oooops!…

This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to winner, Krystal Waters. Thanks to all who have entered!

I love coffee. One thing I love almost as much as coffee is doughnuts. In fact, all it takes is someone to mention the “d-word” or show a picture of a doughnut and an instant craving happens. We had a Dunkin’ Donuts with a 24-hour drive through open up near our house and it is rather dangerous. Just driving by the big pink sign makes me crave my two favorite combinations…coffee and doughnuts.

As much as I love Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, I can’t go there everyday to grab a cup because I can’t possibly go there just for coffee when an entire display of donuts are staring me in the face! That’s why I love this new Dunkin’ Donuts Bakery Series coffee I can brew at home. Check out these new, doughnut inspired flavors:…

Skip the trip to the doughnut shop and make amazing baked doughnuts right at home!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8916 size-full" title="Homemade Baked Chocolate Cake Doughnuts - skip the trip to the doughnut shop and make amazing baked doughnuts right at home! " src="https://www.dineanddish.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Chocolate-Cake-Doughnuts.jpg" alt="Chocolate Cake Doughnuts on parchment paper" width="598" height="900" data-pin-description="Homemade Baked Chocolate Cake Doughnuts - skip the trip to the doughnut shop and make amazing baked doughnuts right at home!
You won’t find any spoilers in this post… just wanted to let you know that ahead of time!

Let me start by telling you, I was late to the Downton Abbey wagon. Because of that, I have had to avoid social media like the plague as it is quite the hot topic in my Twitter feed and on Facebook. With the recent Season 3 season finale, it has been even harder! Everywhere I look there are spoiler posts (and posts kindly marked as spoilers, thank you!)… I have had to avert my eyes so many times to not see something that would give it all away. Luckily, I’ve managed to not read anything… until today. …

I remember a time in my life when I didn’t care for doughnuts. I was in college, and apparently I had the ability to turn off some little switch that kept me from liking things that were not so great for you. You know that switch? The one that seems to take over when you go out on a date with a new guy and even though they have scallops and steak and cheesecake and chocolate cake on the menu, you’ll just have “salad and water”. That crazy switch.

Well the switch is back on and has been for quite some time. What is it about doughnuts and their appeal? Even if someone just mentions the word doughnuts, I’m done for. I can’t get doughnuts off my mind until I head to the local doughnut shop or Krispy Kreme and cure my craving….

I mean, I know that there are people out there who would do anything for their kids… who want the best of the best for them. Of course, I want what’s best for my kids and I want them to do well in life and to succeed. I love them dearly and I would do almost anything for them. Almost…

When it comes to food, I just can’t seem to sacrifice the best for them. The best piece of steak would be gobbled down and not appreciated for it’s flavor by a 4 year old. My 9 year old is only concerned with how much he can get into his mouth in the shortest amount of time… he barely even tastes what he puts in there.

Why am I sharing this with you today? Because when it comes to doughnut holes from our favorite Daylight Donuts shop up the road, I always peer into each bag before handing them out and save the best of the best for myself. The doughnut holes that are perfectly cooked… not too done, still warm, and soft and fluffy. Most mom’s would probably give those to their kids, taking the doughnut holes that aren’t as stellar. But, I’m selfish and if I am going to spend any calories on doughnuts, those little gems need to be the best of the best to make it worth it!

My kids and I decided to make Homemade Yeast Doughnuts and doughnut holes this past weekend. They helped with cutting the dough and dunking the doughnuts into the glaze. Luckily, almost every single doughnut was the best of the best, so I didn’t have to be selfish mama. We could all enjoy soft, tender, warm doughnuts and doughnut holes without my inner struggle regarding my un-willingness to sacrifice the best doughnut holes for my kids.

Delicious homemade breakfast for the family to enjoy on a quiet weekend morning. Dates sneak up on me these days. Is it because time is just flying by too fast or is it that I have really become that unorganized? Either way, I think I’ll lean towards the first excuse. Life is zooming by...

Dates sneak up on me these days. Is it because time is just flying by too fast or is it that I have really become that unorganized? Either way, I think I’ll lean towards the first excuse. Life is zooming by at lightening speed!

Two of my favorite food bloggers, Peabody and Tartlette are hosting a calorie inducing blogging event where they asked everyone around the food blogosphere to make doughnuts and send them the results. If the blogs I’ve peaked at who have turned in their submissions already are any idication, I can bet that once this roundup hits the internet, we will all gain at least five pounds by just looking at the photos!

I have never made doughnuts. I mean… I’ve made those Pillsbury fried bread dough “doughnuts”, but I have never made real, honest to goodness fresh doughnuts at home. My mom told me that once I did make doughnuts at home, I would know right away why people go out and buy doughnuts!

I found a recipe on Recipezaar where you could create the dough in the bread machine, cut them out, let them rise and then fry ’em. Sounded easy enough to me, except I don’t have a deep fryer. Still, assuming I could just use a deep frying pan to do the job, I set out to make the doughnuts.

The hardest part of making these doughnuts was regulating the temperature of the oil in my frying pan. Everything else was simple… the dough was very easy to work with, the doughnuts rose beautifully and they tasted so light and airy. Delicious doughnuts right from my own kitchen!

My son gave me two thumbs up, claiming that “Now we don’t ever have to go out for doughnuts, mom! These are the best tasting doughnuts ever!” I don’t know about that, but these are very tasty! It looks like a fry daddy may be needed in my near future.

Oh – and if you are looking to gain a little weight (seriosly… who ARE you people??), make sure to check out Peabody and Tartlette’s roundup on their blogs on the 15th!
