2007 Goals

I posted this info over in my Family Blog, but thought that some of it applied to the culinary side of my life, so thought I’d post it here too. For those of you that read both, sorry for the repetition!

All of the talk this time of year seems to be about New Year’s Resolutions. I keep meaning to sit down and write some out, but I really feel like I need some quiet time to reflect on what I want to come out of this upcoming year. I haven’t had the quiet time, so I thought I’d at least write down what is top of mind for me right now with the caveat that I can change these or add to them later. These are all in addition to the things I’ve been working on over at 43 Things.

Here is my list of my top 10 things I’d like to accomplish:

1) Menu Plan – make a menu plan each pay period and stick with it

2) Budget – Continue using Mvelopes.com and adhere to the budget we’ve created

3) Host a dinner party each month

4) Blog regularly

5) Tackle the Food and Wine 100 Tastes to Try in 2007 challenge

6) Complete the 2007 To Be Read Challenge

7) Take a digital SLR photography class

8) Take one long family vacation to visit Mike and Ginger/ Mike and Melissa in Chicago, go on to Bryon and Stacy in Ohio, then up to Molly in PA

9) Create a Daily Plan / To Do List for each day and do my best to complete what’s on it

10) Start “Flying” again by following the Fly Lady Plan

BONUS – Have regular date nights with my husband, at least on an every other month basis. This may be hard to do with his travel schedule, but I think it needs to be a priority!

I know there are a million other things I should probably add and I may do that down the road, but for the most part I think this list covers most of the main things that I wish to accomplish.

Happy New Year everyone! Here’s looking forward to the future and hoping it is one of the best years yet.

Found your blog through the comment you left on mine (thanks!). I’ve found loads of great stuff already – thanks for the tips on the TBR challenge, Fly Lady, baguettes and Puppy Chow among other things!!

Good luck with your goals for 2007!

That commando post was too funny! You probably don’t need to take a DSLR specific class…check community education classes for photography!

The Food and Wine Challenge list was, well, interesting. Haven’t read the piece yet, but was the author…Greek? 😉

Very ambitious. Not at all within my budget, but wonderful to think about.

Think I’ll let Anthony Bourdain tackle some (O.K., most) of the traveling for me!

I like your list. You’ve inspired me to think about actually blogging down mine!

Happy New Year and WOW for sharing your resolutions: love it!

    A few things:
    1. For a year my husband and I had date night every week. I kid you not, we were both in graduate school with toddlers and it absolutely carried us through the year. GREAT GOAL, I hope you succeed!

    2. If I would have known you were going to tackle F&W 100 list I would have boxed and sent you #09, the corn bread with scallions. It wasn’t bad but be generous with the baking soda. My own children thought I had added ‘too much flour’ (aka it was heavy and dense as opposed to light and airy). Fun way to cook bread, though, right in the skillet in the oven. (Let me know how yours turns out).

    3. OMG try the [same magazine, Jan 07] F&W Malabar Spice-Crusted Hanger Steaks with Gingered Carrot Puree. It was AWESOME, passing the tastes of numerous palates, household wide. Oh, it is on page 104.

    4. Happy blogging—I look forward to reading more dine and dish in 2007!

Oh we have so many things in common in our "To Do in 2007" list. I only posted 6 things in mine online but I need to do so many of the things that are on yours as well.

I will definately attempt to tackle this Food and Wine 100 Tastes to Try in 2007 with you – it looks amazing!

Can’t believe we’re doing the college tour thing already with my second baby!

So question for any of you who sent your kids to out of state schools or went to out of state schools...how did you do it? She wants to get the heck out of Kansas (I’d like to go with her!). We have money saved, she’ll most likely get a scholarship or two, she’s paying and has money saved as well...but even with that out of state tuition is a beast of an amount. So, did you just assume that student loans were going to be part of that life? And is that worth it to give your kids a shot at a new life outside of your home state? I wish I would have left Kansas for university, and have been here since I was born 😩. I want different for her if that’s what she wants but also just don’t have any experience with how people do out of state college! Any tips?

J is for...jam!
.
My friend @wakschmale makes the best strawberry jam...and I completely forgot about a jar she gave me last year until this morning. Which then inspired me to make my favorite buttermilk biscuits. So so good. Are you a jam, honey, just butter or plain biscuit fan? I love biscuits allll the ways, except with gravy. I have super bad memories of biscuits and gravy growing up. 🤢
.
I’m still slowly making my way through the alphabet for @kimklassen_innercircle a-z photo challenge. I’m bound and determined to finish. It may just take me a little longer than I originally anticipated 🤗.

Also, just noticed Instagram took away the like count on posts. I kind of like that...what do you think?

I is for Inspiration!
.
The “long haul” effects of having Covid back in December are really presenting themselves lately. The continuous persistent headaches are taking a toll and the connection between the brain fog and word retrieval function of my brain has been extra challenging. I had no idea a couple months out, the cognitive effects would still be hanging around.
.
With that said, when I get a burst of inspiration I’m grabbing on for dear life. I made our favorite chocolate chip cookies recipe yesterday and felt the desire to update the blog post photos from 2007! We make these cookies all the time, so I’m not sure why it’s taken me so many years to give that poor post some new photos.
.
If you’re interested in the recipe you can find the link currently in my profile. Enjoy!!

It was so strange being on a plane again. I’m so thankful I have the antibodies because the flights were full, which seemed wrong, but everyone around me did seem to keep their masks on, so that was good.

I can’t wait until travel becomes a regular part of life again. I’ve missed it so much!

G is for...oh so grateful!

I flew to South Texas yesterday to visit my parents whom I haven’t seen in 2 years. They live around 17 hours away from us. We typical get to see each other a few times a year but with the pandemic and other health issues it just wasn’t able to happen and I’ve missed them soooo much.

Grateful to have had COVID last month. Although it was not at all fun, it gave me the antibodies to make this trip possible. My dad is having surgery tomorrow so I’m helping with my mom so my dad can recover without having to worry about her.

Kansas is enjoying frigid temperatures and snow. I picked a great week to head south.

F is for...food photography.
.
This time of year especially, food photography (and I guess all photography actually) is a tug of war with time and light. I had planned on making and photographing a delicious pasta recipe, but my grocery delivery ran a couple of hours late because of snowstorm. So, at the eleventh hour I decided to make a cake...that took over an hour to bake and I had about 90 minutes of natural light left...leaving me with about 30 minutes of ok light to work with.
.
Anyway, this wouldn't work for a client shoot because the cake, although delicious, didn't turn out looking so great. But it will work great for today's F photo for the @kimklassen_innercircle A-Z photo project:) Lemon Citrus Yogurt Cake from this weeks @cabotcheese newsletter. So good!

E is for...Excitement!
.
There’s a lot of excitement in Kansas City as our beloved @chiefs head back to the Super Bowl this weekend! #runitback 🏈
.
It’s so strange because winning the super bowl last year was the last “normal” thing that happened before the pandemic hit. We went from a city full of excitement to shutting down and sheltering in place. Maybe when we win and bring the trophy home this year, it’ll be the start of something great. Let’s hope!

Who are you rooting for Sunday? Chiefs, Buccaneers or tacos? 😂
