I had the honor of being a guest of HGTV’s and visiting the HGTV Dream Home 2017 in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. Today I’m sharing 5 HGTV Dream Home inspired ways to bring more color into your life! Enter HERE for a chance to win the HGTV Dream Home 2017.

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to be a guest of HGTV’s on the island of St. Simon’s Georgia to visit the stunning HGTV Dream Home 2017. As a fan of the HGTV Dream Home since its inception this opportunity was an absolute dream come true! (Hop on over to my Facebook page if you’d like to see a video walkthrough tour of the home I filmed.)

The HGTV Dream Home is a beautiful, home that blends in well with it’s surroundings. It has a subtle, understated beauty that makes it feel warm and inviting, yet elegant and very special at the same time. Designer Brian Patrick Flynn has an incredible knack for blending soft island hues with bright pops of color. Here are a few of the ways I was inspired by how Brian incorporated color throughout the home.

Decorate with Colorful Books

As an absolute book nerd, I will say this was one of my favorite design elements. In every room of the HGTV Dream Home you could find books throughout, adding pops of gorgeous color to the interior design. From the amazing stack of colorful books (I’m totally coveting all the books and the stacking bookshelf) to a small stack of books strewn here or there, it was great to see how adding a touch of color with books can really make a room pop. This is clearly something I can easily incorporate in my own home.

Consider Colorful Wallpaper

As someone who has spent plenty of free time scraping off dreadful, ugly wallpaper from walls, I can’t believe I’m recommending this suggestion, but wallpaper is a great way to incorporate more color into the design of your home. In fact, the wallpaper in the laundry room and pool lounge bathroom of the HGTV Dream Home had me coming home immediately and looking at wallpaper options for my own home.

I am absolutely obsessed with the feather wallpaper in the laundry room, aren’t you? I now have a couple of rooms in my house that are going to get the wallpaper treatment ASAP.

Bring Elements of the Outdoors, Inside

I absolutely love fresh plants and flowers and really appreciate how on a neutral palate, they bring an element of fresh color to a room. From succulents, to fruit, to vases of palm leaves and flowers, each room in the HGTV Dream Home had some element of the outdoors, in.

Plants and flowers are an inexpensive yet impactful way to add color to your design.

Rugs and Throw Pillows

I couldn’t help but notice the use of rugs and throw pillows throughout the HGTV Dream Home. It didn’t dawn on me until seeing the pool lounge room, especially, how an area rug is a great place to take a chance on color. The striped rug and patterned throw pillows really add an element of fun to a room in a subtle way. Instead of going for neutral toned rugs and throw pillows, use those elements as a way to add some unexpected color to a room. It really makes a beautiful impact!

Choose Colorful Artwork

As I walked around the HGTV Dream Home I was really impressed by the various pieces of  artwork Brian Patrick Flynn chose to decorate with. The foyer painting above was my absolute favorite – I wonder if I could pull it off in my house? Also, who knew a couple of colorful dot art prints could add such a dimension of fun to a room? They are so simple yet so colorfuland happy!

When choosing artwork to adorn the walls of your home, try to find pieces that can add an element of even understated color to your room. It really does make a difference!

It was so hard leaving after being there a couple of days. I could totally see myself living there 🙂 Also, I’m the same way and have entered every day for forever…and never won. But it’s fun to dream for sure!

Can’t wait to see you in a just a few short days!

The kitchen is by far my favorite part! The colors are just so gorgeous. I’ve saved so many pictures so that when we have a house of our own I can mimic it! Every new kitchen seems to have white cabinets and gray granite and I LOVE that they didn’t do this here. The green backsplash is GORGEOUS.

Also, I love the idea of the stacking bookshelf but it stresses me out SO MUCH to look at it. They just look like they are going to come crashing down at any moment!!! Beautiful design but I’m not sure how practical for this avid reader.

I loved just walking through the home again, but this time through your eyes and thoughts. What a special experience this was – I still think about some little aspect of this trip to Georgia daily. I can’t wait to see what you do with wallpaper! 🙂

It was nice to see the inside and I too loved the green kitchen backsplash. However, on my email, both the listed views were showing the inside and not one of the home’s outside.

Hi Cindy! Here’s what I found out:
We reached out to HGTV and found that WayFair sold out of the rug pretty quickly. Luckily, Jet.com has it in stock here: https://jet.com/product/detail/2910d887ceb64d91950c56544cb008a7?jcmp=pla:ggl:NJ_dur_Cwin_Home__Decor_a1:Home__Decor_Rugs_Area_Rugs_a1:na:PLA_786096677_41410013912_pla-291554536539:na:na:na:2&code=PLA15

      Hope that helps!

H is for...high!

It was so strange being on a plane again. I’m so thankful I have the antibodies because the flights were full, which seemed wrong, but everyone around me did seem to keep their masks on, so that was good.
.
I can’t wait until travel becomes a regular part of life again. I’ve missed it so much!

G is for...oh so grateful!

I flew to South Texas yesterday to visit my parents whom I haven’t seen in 2 years. They live around 17 hours away from us. We typical get to see each other a few times a year but with the pandemic and other health issues it just wasn’t able to happen and I’ve missed them soooo much.

Grateful to have had COVID last month. Although it was not at all fun, it gave me the antibodies to make this trip possible. My dad is having surgery tomorrow so I’m helping with my mom so my dad can recover without having to worry about her.

Kansas is enjoying frigid temperatures and snow. I picked a great week to head south.

F is for...food photography.
.
This time of year especially, food photography (and I guess all photography actually) is a tug of war with time and light. I had planned on making and photographing a delicious pasta recipe, but my grocery delivery ran a couple of hours late because of snowstorm. So, at the eleventh hour I decided to make a cake...that took over an hour to bake and I had about 90 minutes of natural light left...leaving me with about 30 minutes of ok light to work with.
.
Anyway, this wouldn't work for a client shoot because the cake, although delicious, didn't turn out looking so great. But it will work great for today's F photo for the @kimklassen_innercircle A-Z photo project:) Lemon Citrus Yogurt Cake from this weeks @cabotcheese newsletter. So good!

E is for...Excitement!
.
There’s a lot of excitement in Kansas City as our beloved @chiefs head back to the Super Bowl this weekend! #runitback 🏈
.
It’s so strange because winning the super bowl last year was the last “normal” thing that happened before the pandemic hit. We went from a city full of excitement to shutting down and sheltering in place. Maybe when we win and bring the trophy home this year, it’ll be the start of something great. Let’s hope!

Who are you rooting for Sunday? Chiefs, Buccaneers or tacos? 😂

D is for... Dreary (and Dog)
February has always been my least favorite month. I have a special name for this month that may start with another not so nice F word...🤭.
.
In Kansas, the sun usually doesn't shine that often, it's cold, and just kind of gray and blah.
.
My indoor jungle makes me happy though...especially this space in my office. Houseplants almost makes me forget we’re in the “F” month 😂.
.
Also, my dog (my favorite d word) would not sit still for a picture when I had my tripod set up, but I finally caught her sitting on her bed and had to catch a picture with my phone. Swipe and you’ll see she is much overdue for a haircut.

I am so lucky to be working with really great clients who are doing the hard work and making big changes in their lives. It’s been the perfect fit for me and I know it’s what I am meant to be doing. Coffee, of course, is my favorite C word and Crystals…my daughters got me into the energy powers of crystals and it’s been really fun to learn all about them.

B is for Books! Are you a big reader? I wasn’t really a reader growing up. Well, I take that back. In junior high I plowed through the Sweet Valley High series (anyone else?) 😊 And when I was in elementary school I would bust my butt to get to the highest level in the SRA Reading box before anyone else. But I wasn’t a kid who you’d find with their nose in a book, ever.
.

It wasn’t until I was an adult, and my kids began to sleep through the night, that I started reading for fun. Now, I read all the time and it’s one of my favorite pastimes. I love talking books with people and sharing recommendations. I really don’t watch TV, so books, especially right now, is my main form of entertainment.
.

This is why for the @kimklassen_innercircle A-Z photography challenge, I knew that Books would be my B. It’s my favorite B word (beating out Bullet Journaling, Bread, Blankets, Be Happy, etc).

A is for Alone. I think one of the hardest things for me to get used to this past year is rarely being alone. My husband used to travel all the time. My school aged kids were in school all day while I worked. I’d even get several days a month in a hotel room by myself for my work travels. I like my alone time and it’s definitely something I miss.
.

I’m easily distracted so you will usually find me working in complete silence…maybe just the hum of my essential oil diffuser and the sound of my fingers on my keyboard. I need the quiet and treasure silence.
.

With that said, I’ve loved the extra time with my family - and we’ve all learned over the past several months how to give each other space and recognize when we need that space. As of today, my kids all are back to school full time in person 😢. Nick is still working from home and will be for the time being, but now the aloneness feels strange. I’m sure we’ll get used to this “new normal” yet again!
.

This month in @kimklassen photography Inner Circle, we’re tackling the alphabet, with an A-Z photography challenge (interpreting that however we see fit). If you want to join us, check out this wonderful community of photographers at @kimklassen_innercircle 📷.
