How to Make Baking Powder Substitute

Jump to Recipe -

Your sweet baby boy (ok, he’s 10, but still… humor me) wakes up and comes to you in his half awake stupor, snuggles up to you on the couch and says, “Mama, can you make waffles for breakfast today?”

Naturally, you oblige. His request is simple and if it makes him happy, it makes you happy.

You head into the kitchen with your favorite waffle recipe in hand, ready to serve up a scrumptious breakfast. You whistle along as you start dumping in the ingredients… a little flour here, some salt there, crack a couple of eggs, baking powder… baking powder!!

It is only then you remember you made your Big Batch Pancakes to freeze over the weekend and used the last of your baking powder. What’s a mom to do? Is it worth dragging all the kids to the store to pick up baking powder? You can’t disappoint your son after you told him you could make his breakfast request happen. It’s too early to call the neighbors. You…

When things turn grim and you don’t know what to do, you turn to Google, of course! And Google to the rescue! You make your own baking powder substitute, your waffles get gobbled up, and everyone is happy. The day is saved. Thank goodness for Google!

It’s so funny… I’m a terrible baker because I never have the ingredients I need and then I start mixing things together, only to find that I don’t have baking powder. Great post darling!

A great post! I didn’t know this. I always added vinegar to the milk to make it sour and then used soda. This would be so much better!

Love this! Living downtown it is not always easy to just “run out” and grab something that I am out of. I love having these ideas in the back of my head!

If you have a list of things like this ‘in the back of your head’ you have a much much larger file cabinet than I do ! :>)

I love this! I’ve heard of it before but it’s really great to have a reference recipe to use in a pinch. Thank you!

    Wait … 3 teaspoons equal a Tablespoon, right? I’m confused …

This is WAY helpful info because pancake mix here is not cheap and I’ve been making my own … but know that soon I’ll find myself without Baking Powder!

(psst – you have a minor typo in your title when it links up on the top of the browser window … not sure what’s up with that)

What a great tip! It is also a way to use up the big bag ofcream of tarter I bought before I realized that snicker doodles and meringues were the only thing I’d use it for!

thank you so much! I like to use aluminum-free baking powder but my local grocery store doesn’t carry it and I have to order it online, so this comes in handy while waiting for the mail to come!
