Do you want a great Super Bowl recipe? How about serving up some Baked Brie?

What’s that you say? Baked Brie is girly food – not manly enough for a Super Bowl party?

First of all, girls like football too, so you need to have some girl food at your party. Secondly, this is a savory Baked Brie recipe kicked up a notch with some delicious caramelized onions. Men won’t be able to stay away once they see the oooey gooey melted cheese piled with crispy edged, sweet, caramelized onions.

Will you get some flack for serving Brie at a Super Bowl party? Maybe. Let the “too manly for Baked Brie” people have one taste and I promise they’ll change their mind.

Thanks to Dine & Dish Facebook Fans for walking through my adventure into a savory Baked Brie experience! You all are awesome.

Prep Time 20 minutes minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes minutes
Total Time 45 minutes minutes
Author Dine & Dish

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Package Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry Sheets 1 sheet
  • 1 8 oz wheel Brie Cheese I really like Alouette brand
  • 1 sweet / yellow onion thinly sliced and caramelized following this method http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/how_to_caramelize_onions/

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 °. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  • Slice the wheel of Brie in half, horizontally, so that the halves are two, flatter wheels of Brie.
  • Lay the puff pastry on the cookie sheet. Place half of the Brie, rind-side down, onto the pastry dough.
  • Spoon caramelized onions evenly over the top. Place the other half of Brie, rind-side up, over the caramelized onions.
  • Fold the puff pastry up and over the Brie, sealing so it is bundled up. Flip entire Brie over so seal is on the bottom.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until puff pastry is golden brown. Server warm with crackers or baked pita chips.

TOTALLY, like, BRILLIANT! I have had a puff pastry and wheel of brie in the fridge for a few days and was trying to think of a way to jazz it up. This is totally it.

This looks great and is a favorite in our house. We go more sweet than savory. We’ll need to do that next time. I would suggest baking it at 400 to really make it golden and crisp.

    • Kristen says

      February 2, 2012 at 12:47 pm

Thanks, Greg… I’ll definitley try that. I did feel like it could have been crispier!

Men love cheese, men love brie. Especially if it’s topped with onions. They’ll eat the entire thing in seconds!

I was also looking for a savory baked brie recipe and this is perfect! Caramelized onions add just enough sweetness to complement melted cheese. Thanks, Kristen:)

*Swoon* Just added this to my list for Super Bowl Sunday!! One question. I have never worked with puff pastry. Do I need to roll it out with a pin or simply place the cheese on it once it’s thawed? Thanks so much!!!

You don’t have to say baked brie twice! I’m hoping my man will stay away from this so I can enjoy it all by myself. I’m so selfish sometimes!

Caramelized onions and cheese? This sounds like the best baked brie ever. This – and only this – sounds like my ideal Valentine’s dinner. With wine, of course. 🙂

I went to London back over the new years eve 2012. while there I ate at a restaurant that had a baked brie that was to die for. I’d never been able to find the recipe that even comes close to it. so I stole many different recipes to modify and find the flavor I was looking for.

after much experimentation, I found the flavor profile I was looking for.

for the topping: caramelize a combination of onions and filberts(small hazelnuts).

for baking: at 350 degrees: top whole brie wheel (including rind) with apricot jam and put full caramelized mixture on and around the wheel. bake until cheese melts. around fifteen to twenty minutes.

    enjoy.

The Ingredient list calls for onion “carmelized using this method” I don’t see the method anywhere in this recipe. Is is special, or just carmelize the onion?
