Time Machine (Recipe: Pumpkin Biscuits with Orange-Honey Butter)

  • Facebook
  • Twitter

One bite was all it took for me to be sitting around our dining room table in my childhood home, nylons still on my feet, shoes off, my parents nagging at me that I’m ruining my nylons because I am not wearing shoes… “Do you know how much nylons cost? You are running around the house with them still on with no shoes, ruining them.”

Church had just gotten out and upon returning home, my mom had baked the wheat bread that had been rising while we were gone. Fresh from the oven, we all gathered around the table for the first slice. The first slice was always the best… smothered in her homemade honey butter and still warm to the touch. “Don’t ruin your lunch,” my mom would say. But she knew better. Attempting to keep us from ruining our lunch was fruitless. We couldn’t help ourselves. One slice simply was not enough and our family would eat her bread until we couldn’t take another bite. As often happened on those Sunday’s, a loaf of bread would be be our lunch.

These biscuits are not my mom’s homemade wheat bread nor is the honey butter just any plain old honey butter, but even still…upon first bite the food time machine took me away to days already gone. What food transports you on a time machine back to your childhood?

If you are looking for something incredibly special to put on your table this holiday season, this recipe for Pumpkin Biscuits with Orange-Honey Butter is certain to enhance your holiday table. With flavors so subtle and rich at the same time, this is one combination that is sure to make a lasting impression.

Cut into 12 biscuits with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Bake at 450° for 11 minutes or until golden. Serve warm with 1/4 cup Orange-Honey Butter.

Scrumptious. One look at that photo makes me want to be there and about to eat it – even if I had to wear horrible nylons. 🙂

I remember the nylons!! My mom makes this chicken dish that’s covered in a creamy mushroom sauce. I’ve never made it myself (I don’t even want to think about what’s in it) so it’s a favorite I definitely associate with childhood. Love the looks of these pumpkin biscuits!

I can only imagine how wonderful your house must have smelled when your mom was making fresh bread. It sounds amazing. I love the idea of honey orange butter. I will definitely have to give this one a try. There is something about freshly baked breads that is always completely irresistible!

For me there are two recipes that transport me back to my mother’s table – Chicken a la King and Baked Alaska. Both were specialities of hers back in the late 60’s/early 70’s. If I close my eyes, I can imagine the taste of both of them right now.

I love this story, Kristen. Reminds me of when I was a kid too – running around outside in socks. My mom gave up after a while. And these biscuits sound di-vine! I will have to make them. The orange honey-butter is what really got me! Thanks for the recipe.

Pumpkin biscuits & orange honey butter – perfect combination! I loved it when my dad helped make homemade pizza – he always made the dough, my mother always made the sauce and fixed the toppings. Sunday dinners were usually a pot roast or chicken w/my favorite food ever, potatoes!

Mmm coming home to homemade bread fresh from the oven is always a glorious thing. I wish I had had such a thing growing up. These sound marvelous and I would love to bake them for my future children. To allow them to have this kind of taste-memory.

When I was sick, my Mom made me “Milk Toast”. It was cinnamon toast with heated milk over it. Actually, the milk was under it. If it was poured in correctly, the milk would soak the bread leaving a crust of cinnamon, butter and sugar floating on top. Cinnamon toast always takes me back to that time. I also like tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. These were also a staple of Moms. Oh, and creamed chipped beef on toast.
