Time to Be Free (Recipe: The Perfect Margarita)

  • Facebook
  • Twitter

I’m leaving my family. Saying goodbye to my husband and kids. Packing my bags and heading south.

Don’t worry – I’ll be back. I’m just going on a very much needed girls weekend! This is the first girls weekend I have been on, kid/baby free, in more years than I want to count. I’m excited to sleep in. To eat at restaurants that don’t have a kids menu. To sit in the hot tub without having to turn my head every 30 seconds to watch some fantastic trick being performed in the pool. To carry a tiny purse. To sleep in a bed, alone without tiny feet and hands punching and kicking me in the middle of the night. To shop without having to drag a kid out of the store because of a meltdown. To shop without having to take someone to go potty. To eat my dessert without having to share. To ride in the car listening to songs I want to listen to. Oh the joys… I can’t wait.

I’m also a little excited, in a very rude “you probably shouldn’t say this out loud” kind of way that my husband is going to have a crazy, busy weekend. 3 soccer games, 2 baseball games and one T-Ball game, plus a softball practice thrown in. I know that it is not nice of me to wish a busy weekend on him, but I can’t help it. I’m secretly smirking. With his crazy travel schedule last year, I did it all by myself for so long. He needs a little dose of mommy reality.

And I know when I return, he’ll be a little more appreciative of what I do and I’ll be a little more appreciative of him as well. I’ll be a better mom for taking some time out for me. I need it. I deserve it. I can’t wait.

(and I’ll make my husband one of these as soon as I get home… he’ll need it. He’ll deserve it. He doesn’t know it yet, but by Sunday night, he won’t be able to wait.)

The Perfect Margarita from CHOW

  • Salt, for rimming the glass (optional)
  • Ice
  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila (blanco, 100 percent agave)
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce Cointreau (not Triple Sec)
  1. If using salt, place in a shallow dish. Moisten the rim of a rocks glass with a dampened paper towel, then dip in salt.
  2. Fill the glass with ice; add tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau; and stir a few times until chilled. Serve immediately.

I totally hear you on the need for a weekend escape. I have one planned for 7/2 and it is affectionately been nicknamed Mission: Debauchery, though that name has not been shared with the husbands’ of the women who are going, let they not get a permission slip. Margarita looks divine – love the pops of color in the stem!

Good for you!! I’m sure you’ll have a great weekend.

Just curious about your margarita recipe — how come you’re so specific that it should be cointreau and not triple sec? They are both orange flavored liquors, non?

I know this sounds simple, but I think this margarita recipe can change the world. I know too many people who have told me they hate tequila but will drink a watered down, overly sweet, syrup-based slushy that passes for a marg in many places, but who have left the Dark Side once they tried this three-ingredient authentic version.

I will challenge you on one thing, though. Cointreau is fine. I prefer Patron’s Citronage. But if you use quality tequila and real lime juice, than triple sec works quite well.

And you don’t have to spend a fortune on tequila. There are lots of $20-25 offerings out there these days. And like you said, blanco, because you want the shining freshness of pure tequila without the mellowing of the oak barrel.

    Cheers!

I’m doing something very similar this weekend! And, my poor husband has a similiar schedule… something nearly every moment that I’m away. Guess, I may have to do something nice for him when I get back… but, I do figure me getting away will bring back a happier wife & mom… so, it will be worth it for them in the end! Enjoy your weekend!

I hope you have an utterly fantastic time on your getaway, Kristen! You so deserve it!

Thanks for the recent comments on my blogs. I’ve been in a bit of a blog slump. Just not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything I’d like to do. My folks were here this past week and I didn’t get any new pictures either! What was I thinking?! And my photo blog is in hiatus these days. I really need to carve out some time to get out and shoot some new photos. I miss that hobby!

Here’s to a fun-filled summer and delicious margaritas. I think I’ll whip up a batch of my favorite Adirondack Margaritas this afternoon. Cheers! 🙂

Oh thank you for not putting triple sec in it! So much better with Cointreau or even a splash of orange juice. On the rocks. Salted. Never blended. Amen. Hallelujah.

While a true lover of the grape…this day calls for a margarita and your take is a great one. I have a recipe I love and everyone wants to know why it’s so good. Easy. Like yours…good tequila which means not Gold. Fresh lime juice and orange liqueur which means Cointreau or Patron Citronge or Grand Marnier but not Triple Sec which is just artificially flavored sugar syrup.

One thing I do that I’ve grown to love and even the ‘no salt’ aficionados enjoy is to make a blend of salt and sugar to rim my glasses. Love it.

Have a great time…for all the reasons you cited above!
